Sassy Squad

Our goat herd is lovingly known as The Sassy Squad. In 2021, we sold our former herd, known as The Diva Herd, when we took a brief hiatus from farming. One of our original two goats, Kaylee, our beloved herd queen, remained with us through her retirement until her passing in 2025.

Today, her legacy continues through her daughter, Kiwi, who left with the herd in 2021 and returned home to us in 2023. Having her back has been a special part of rebuilding our herd.

From the beginning, our breeding program has focused on three key goals: dairy production, ease of kidding, and exceptional personalities. Of course, they are still goats, and each one comes with their own unique quirks and opinions! Over the years, we have found that mixed-breed goats best meet the needs of our farm and our goals. Our herd includes genetics from Nubian, Nigerian Dwarf, Toggenburg, LaMancha, and Alpine goats.

The Sassy Squad enjoys access to five wooded pastures totaling more than nine acres, giving them plenty of room to browse, explore, and express their natural behaviors. Their diet includes large bales of alfalfa hay for our milking does and coastal hay for our bucks and dry does, along with a balanced daily goat feed ration. And, like most goats, they never turn down an occasional treat of animal crackers—also known around here as "goat crack."

In 2026, we are beginning a sustainability trial on the farm by planting both running and clumping bamboo in one pasture. Bamboo has shown promise as a nutritious forage source for goats, and we are excited to evaluate how it may contribute to a more sustainable feeding program while providing additional browse opportunities for the herd.
